Dennis Brutus (1924 – 2009)
He was a South-African poet and world-renowned political organiser whose works speak of his sufferings and those of his fellow blacks. In 1963, Brutus was sent to Robben Island where he was housed in the cell next to Nelson Mandela. There, in 1964-65 he wrote the collections “Sirens Knuckles Boots” and “Letters to Martha”. Brutus continued to be an activist up until his death as he fought for more to be done by South Africa on Climate Change.
